2 of the most relevant bands of the year, Phoenix and Animal Collective ‘collab’ to output a remix of some song. I feel like this takes me back to the bloghouse era, when the most relevant bloghouse bands would create alt-synergy by remixing one another. We have possibly never seen a collab on this level in the history of the indiesphere. Wish I could be an entry level music criticism bro so that I could ‘get pumped for hearing this mp3 for the first time’ and then ‘talk myself into the mp3 being 70% better than it actually is.’ Would possibly create a writeup that utilized the word ‘pop’ in some ‘descriptive’ phrase like ‘melted pop sensibilities.’ I will also use of the word ‘textural.’ In addition, this theoretical writeup/review would include commentary on the state of modern indie music and the effects of ‘internet hype’, eventually losing focus on analysis of the actual song. My writeup would include between 5-10 hyperlinks to previous AnCo+Phoenix content that my blogsite had generated.

I feel like this remix is possibly ‘forgettable’, or it is possibly ‘Phoenix in their natural form.’ While Phoenix’s songs are ‘catchy’, it is impossible to decipher ‘what the fuck they are talking about’ in their lyrics. This possibly has to do with a French to English language barrier. Imagine if u had to write ’smart-sounding’ pop lyrics in a foreign language and ended up making weird/forced/generic metaphors in every1 of your songs. Phoenix has sorta turned into Jonas Brothers tween pop for hi level music criticism bros.

Sorta miss Deakin. Since most of my readership became AnCo fans after MerriweathPostPavvy, you might not know that AnCo had a fourth member named ‘The Deakin’ a long time ago. He ‘left the band’ and no1 really knows what happens. Wonder ‘what really happened’ to Deakin. Seems like they must be hiding something. I feel like they hand him remix work ‘for sympathy’ just because they feel bad, and still ‘want him to feel involved.’ Seems like the remixes would be better if Panda Bear made them. Does n e 1 know what happened with DeakinGate?

It seems like I would hear this song in a local coffee shop when an entry-level barista selects a playlist to try to seem ‘authentic.’ They would also probably play something by the Knife followed by a Fever Ray song, just to prove that they ‘understand’ that the broad from the Knife is Fever Ray.

Not sure how films work since I am not a film student, but I think that this film uses old French techniques that were used to make things seem very authentic. Not sure what they are called.

Music Video: Dead Man’s Bones – Name in Stone

Analysis: I only posted this because it is Ryan Gosling’s band. I think he was in the popular movie ‘The Notebook’ about people who get alzheimer’s or something. I am not sure what he is ‘trying to do’/'trying to sound like.’ Might be trying to be ‘The Killers’ or maybe ‘early Grizzly Bear.’

Think it’s kinda weird when mainstream celebs ‘go indie’ and I can’t evaluate their music fairly without ‘pretending they are a character from one of their movies.’ Think I will call this The Jason Schwartzman Effect. Just think of him as his character from Rushmore whenever I hear Phantom Planet/Coconut Records.

Music Video: Omar K – Rainbow Arabia

Analysis: Have never heard of this band, but I think this is the reason that ‘people should make music videos. Just to like ‘get attention.’ In this video, you’ll see some sort of tribal-where-the-wild-things-are crew invade a super market. Then they get ‘all scary’ and ‘violent’ and ‘zany.’ Think it is supposed to be some sort of statement about hunting and gathering. There is some scary little kid. A lady grows a beard. They kill some people who are shopping. Probs the only video ‘worth watching’ in this post. Not sure if this band/person is a man/woman, but feels like what I expect Bat for Lashes/GangGang Dance to be, even though I have never really listened to them.

Music Video – Department of Eagles – No One Does It Like You

Analysis: Think that this band has ’some of the bros from Grizzly Bear’ in it. Not sure which band I ‘like more.’ I think that every band should actually be a clustered band with 2-3 sub-bands perpetually generating memes. I think this video is about war or something like that. Not really sure, but think it might be ‘visually stunning.’

Analysis: From what I understand, one of the bros in the band/dj duo N.A.S.A. is brothers with Spike Jonez. Not sure if that ‘gave his band an advantage.’ I think NASA had an album come out, and they just had every1 who is ‘relevant’ contribute on their tracks. Feel like it is probably a good business model, if u have the connections. Music Video: Phoenix – Lisztomania (Live on Saturday Night Live)

Analysis: ‘Kind of lackluster.’ I am not sure if it is because they are more of a studio band (not a bad thing), or because they are just FRENCH. Think that French people live in a different version of reality. Think that the lead singer ‘has such a consistent voice’ that it makes him seem like he is lip synching. Maybe he is. Kind of weird how their next album is ‘all anticipated’ but think I will probably ‘not see them live’ just in case they ‘ruin their image’ for me.

Phoenix has always been good. They are from France. Their albums have generally all been ‘pop that people respect because it is well-crafted’, but since the mp3 economy has been so dry lately, I think there is a high demand for this kind of accessible sound, so it will probably be ‘moderately overhyped’ and lead people to say ‘it’s not THAT good.’ I have always wondered how their lead singer sounds so French when he sings. Think he is married to that Lost in Translation director lady. When this mp3 ‘dropped’, it kinda reminded me of the glory days of 2k7, when all blogs posted the same mp3 on the same day, cuz it was ’so good/relevant.’ Hopefully Q2+Q3 give us more new music to blog about than Q1 did. h8 u 2k9Q1.

I have posted the original version of this song, in addition 2 various versions of their song “PARIS.” This remix is supposed to be conceptual, I think. So while I am not sure if I actively ‘like’ it, I think it makes sense if u have a lot of time 2 kill and need something that sounds ‘different.’ I think not all remixes are supposed 2 be ‘dance anthems’, kind of like when AnCo remixes something.
