Phoenix - Love Like a Sunset (Animal Collective Remix/Deakin's Jam)
2 of the most relevant bands of the year, Phoenix and Animal Collective 'collab' to output a remix of some song. I feel like this takes me back to the bloghouse era, when the most relevant bloghouse bands would create alt-synergy by remixing one another. We have possibly never seen a collab on this level in the history of the indiesphere. Wish I could be an entry level music criticism bro so that I could 'get pumped for hearing this mp3 for the first time' and then 'talk myself into the mp3 being 70% better than it actually is.' Would possibly create a writeup that utilized the word 'pop' in some 'descriptive' phrase like 'melted pop sensibilities.' I will also use of the word 'textural.' In addition, this theoretical writeup/review would include commentary on the state of modern indie music and the effects of 'internet hype', eventually losing focus on analysis of the actual song. My writeup would include between 5-10 hyperlinks to previous AnCo+Phoenix content that my blogsite had generated.
I feel like this remix is possibly 'forgettable', or it is possibly 'Phoenix in their natural form.' While Phoenix's songs are 'catchy', it is impossible to decipher 'what the fuck they are talking about' in their lyrics. This possibly has to do with a French to English language barrier. Imagine if u had to write 'smart-sounding' pop lyrics in a foreign language and ended up making weird/forced/generic metaphors in every1 of your songs. Phoenix has sorta turned into Jonas Brothers tween pop for hi level music criticism bros.
Sorta miss Deakin. Since most of my readership became AnCo fans after MerriweathPostPavvy, you might not know that AnCo had a fourth member named 'The Deakin' a long time ago. He 'left the band' and no1 really knows what happens. Wonder 'what really happened' to Deakin. Seems like they must be hiding something. I feel like they hand him remix work 'for sympathy' just because they feel bad, and still 'want him to feel involved.' Seems like the remixes would be better if Panda Bear made them. Does n e 1 know what happened with DeakinGate?
It seems like I would hear this song in a local coffee shop when an entry-level barista selects a playlist to try to seem 'authentic.' They would also probably play something by the Knife followed by a Fever Ray song, just to prove that they 'understand' that the broad from the Knife is Fever Ray.
Relevant Band + Relevant Band ≠ Relevant Remix

The Tough Alliance are typically kinda 'out of touch with reality' in a post-meaningful kind of way. Their gimmick is kinda 'letting things be meaningful in a meaningful kid-like perspective' kind of way. They want 2 not be afraid to 'be a dreamer'/'idealist.'

Here is their video for "NeoViolence."
Fun Fact: Did u know that the Tough Alliance don't sing LIVE? They just pretend 2 sing (kinda like Justice/Milli Vanilli).
n e ways, the Shazam Remix of "Neo Violence" is a lil bit authentic disco-y.
Think I might put it on my iPod for when I have to walk to Art History class and I need to get 'pumped up' and 'focused' kinda like when Michael Phelps listened to black people rap b4 he earned 30 Chinese gold medals.

I remember back during the Remix Economy's golden age in 2k6k7, the Teenagers were able to deliver on a wide range of remixes, usually taking the song to a new level. That's what remixes are for, yall...to appeal 2 more people. <3 cross branding <3
N e ways, have yall heard about Vampire Weekend? They are pretty buzzworthy. I think I saw them on MTV/in a respected online music magazine/saw them on a mainstream late nite talk show.

I remember when I used to be a blog that posted an mp3 every day, I would actively try to 'find' new music. One thing I will always be proud of is being the first BlogBro to blog about SymbolOne. [hypemachine evidence]
When Justice used SymbolOne's song "Love Juice" in their failed FabricLive mix, I was proud because it meant that Justice reads my blog.
N E WAYS...I read in a blog that DVAS is 'the Canadian Cut Copy.' They are pretty good, and SymbolOne really 'remixes the shit out of' their song 'Ambient Room.' They probably just need to be signed by Modular/Kitsune/EdBanger/misc. alt-lectro label so they can 'take their image to the next level and convince mainstream alties that it is okay to like DVAS/symbolone.' I feel like the power of the alt-label = promoting acts that aren't as accessible to people without neon-electro-goggles/hearing-aids.
Enjoy, yall! Also, here is a poem I wrote today.

I've always found the consumer acceptance of HEALTH to be an interesting thing to try to understand. They were co-branded with Crystal Castles with the hit blogville song "Crimewave," and they've had a ton of remixes made for the club and for plenty of alternative bro iPods. Even though they play hardcore concept rock, they understand the power of the remix, and have utilized it to create a stronger brand.
They put all of their remixes on an album and called it HEALTH DISCO.
I think it's safe to assume that there's less blog readers who buy actual albums, and way more d-bags who browse record stores to buy CDs. I could see a lot of people who have never heard some of these remixes but enjoy thinking that Health is really good purchasing "HEALTH DISCO."
When I start to think about HEALTH too much, I wonder if I would feel the same about them if they didn't have remixes. If NO AGE had their songs remixed by popular producers, would I buy into them? Without remixes of Health, I might have written a post about 'how I don't understand why people like HEALTH so much.'
But yeah, I like a few Health songs and a few of their remixes, and I think blog-fueled music has kind of needed a hardcoreish band to counterbalance too much electro or too much weinery indie rock on all types of blogs. Health has a highly bloggable production model.
I also think they were pretty fortunate that the CFCF remix turned out to be one of the best 'remixes of a hardcore-ish song that a producer managed to convert into a pop hit.'
While there have been plenty of REMIX ALBUMS already, I feel like Health is one of the first bands to release most of these remixes to blogs to keep their buzz sustained as they toured, then actually put them on an album for consumption beyond blog-readers and DJs.

I was watching this MSTRKRFT interview which features some good insights into their brand, creative process, and showcases some of the best & worst habits of alternative celebrities.
At the 4:20 mark in the video, the MSTRKRFT bros start talking about remixes, and go pretty in depth into their remixable criteria manifesto.
Do you enjoy MSTRKRFT Remixes? I've read a few HRO comments about songs or the way people look that say "I think this would be better if MSTRKRFT remixed it." Do you buy into the theory that MSTRKRFT can fix any thing?
I've never been particularly into their originals, but I think they are probably pretty socially relevant in terms of 'being a 2 man electro act that was a pioneer in learning how to capture the hearts of Generation Y clubgoers.' When it comes to modern indie music, I think they might be one of the band/producers most responsible for 'Americanizing' the current state of electro-club-dance stuff.
Whenever I hear a MSTRKRFT songs, I end up somewhere within this range of conclusions:
BAD CONCLUSION: "Why do people like MSTRKRFT so much?"
OKAY CONCLUSION: "I don't 'get' this, but it's probably really good if I knew a lot about the history of electronic music."
GOOD CONCLUSION: "This is pretty good."
How to you feel about MSTRKRFT's body of remix work. Do u wish they stuck to remixing lesser-known bands like Metric or New Young Pony Club? Or do you like this new phase where they are remixing Usher, Jesse McCartney, and who knows who else within the next 2 years? As alternative markets continue to transition into mainstream markets, MSTRKRFT could continue to be a critical intermediary between both worlds.
If some1 could remix your life, who would it be?

Justin Timberlake What Goes Around Comes Around (Junkie XL Small Room Remix)
I'm looking forward to the day where we're tired of seeing so many remix contest GIFs in the sidebars of blogs. We can all complain about there being so many remixes of songs that were already close to perfect in their original form. (Some people might already feel this way.)
Remix Contests force the bloggers to blog about the band atleast 2.5 times. It's a good situation because remixes are helpful for all parties involved, even the blog.
Here are two Notable Remix "Contests
Chromeo Remix Contest
http://www.u-myx.com/Music/Chromeo/Tenderoni
This remix contest is run by U-MYX, which provides software for the users to remix the songs with. Imagine messing with all of the tracks from "Tenderoni" in an interface that's so easy, even myspace kids can use it. U-MYX is like remixing + a social network. It may or may not be 'the future.'

The Kitsune Remix Contest for Thieves Like Us has also mildly taken over the blogosphere. Having this GIF on your website means that you are a blog worth taking seriously.

The Teenagers have established a formidable business model in the post-HypeMachine world. With approachable original songs that carry their own weight in their demo format, and memorable remixes of the same songs, The Teenagers will be emulated for years to come. In addition, their ability to remix other bands has increased their profile dramatically. While "Homecoming" could have been a Top Song for a week or two, remixes have increased its listenability by over 1000%.
Their user pics and utilization of gifs perfectly utilize the power of imagery in the modern world where Top 8s mean everything. This blog post is more interesting because of this GIF.

The Teenagers have forced the hands of the bloggers and made it clear that they are too bloggable not to blog about, even if your blog focuses on all of that new dance crap or that 'significant' organic crap.

It's a concept worth exploring, and it will only become more relevant in the coming years. I am a big fan of bloggers, DJs, and Hype Machines changing the face of the music industry. I can't wait until Laptop DJs rule the world, and every 16 year old needs to have the hottest local mashup artist playing their Sweet 16.

It's always important to have a semi-ironic popular rap song in your 'Recently Played' list in iTunes. It's usually a good ice breaker. A really good song is SOULJA BOY's "Crank That" AKA "Crank Dat." Here are a few good remixes of the song, too. If you are a DJ, you need to have the FLYEST remixes.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all about Ratatat. 'Those dudes can wail!'
If some one ever asks you what you listen to and you want to sound like you are "in"/"know what you're talking about", Ratatat is usually a choice that no one will attack.
If they do attack, you can just say, "Yeah, I mainly only listen to the remixes, semi-ironically."

I'm sure we've all stumbled upon Chris Crocker's vlogged about mental breakdown about leaving Britney Spears alone.
If I could tell every one to leave something alone, it would be the tracks off Panda Bear's Person Pitch.
I know there's a desire to remix what is hot, or blogged about, or what people will give a listen to, but I'm not really digging what I've heard. It's borderline offensive.
There's a Mr Devlin Jamaican Plain HUMPBACKS remix where a bunch of whale noises are added, plus some mediocre bears. There's also a a Mashup of Black Rob's song 'LIKE WHOA' with Bros.
Personally, I'd just feel a lot more comfortable hearing what type of remix Avey Tare, or Ariel Pink, or Rusty Santos or some one like that would do.
'Hey it's me, Noah Lennox. I'm a pretty chill dude.'
Anyways, we just want to be on the record of not ENDORSING Panda Bear Remixes. I'm sure he doesn't care/could justify how it ultimately is a good thing that there is a BlackRob Mashup out there, but it's important to blog about ISSUES that are relevant to the AnCo Community.

Certainly Sir is a band that I've been listening to for a while now. I've enjoyed their songs for a while. Maybe I got into them when I listened to a lot of Postal Service, but I don't think that matters, right? It's good, though. Another huge sell on Certainly Sir is their website. Check it out. GREAT flash based website that highlights their image, and the music. Too bad they didn't build a purevolume type of thing with that interface.

One business model/record label that I think it doing a great job of penetrating the blogosphere is Italians Do It Better. They have some great bands that really sound appropriate, collectively with a disco meets modern arpeggios. Glass Candy, Mirage, and the Chromatics are great.
