Salem is a buzzband consisting of 2 bros and 1 girl.
They were lumped into the rape gaze genre by Pitchfork, but then Pitchfork thought the genre was 'sexist'/mean 2 women, so they retracted the term in the review but by then the damage had already been done and every1 was riding rape gazes [link].
They sing songs that sound really dark and heavy.
2 of the bros are openly gay. Not sure what the girl's deal is.
They got a lot of buzz in 2k9 because they were notable horrible at SXSW [link], but then in 2k10 people turned the corner on them even though they are the same product.
